Our IMOCA - Gitana 80 is designed to be one of the fastest monohulls in the world. Designed by Farr Yacht Design in 2007 for shorthanded ocean racing, our IMOCA 60 has seen a host of skippers at the helm, including Jean Le Cam, Fabrice Amedeo and Romain Attanasio. It’s non-foiling and solid, so is the perfect boat for the Vendée Globe.
Designed for Loïck Peyron with the aim of participating in the Vendée Globe, the boat initially competed in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2007 with Jean-Baptiste Le Vaillant (8th), then The Transat, which the skipper from La Baule won for the third time! While heading the fleet in the solo round the world race, Loïck Peyron saw his mast break up off Kerguelen.
The Farr design then headed to Spain with Guillermo Altadill, then Pachi Rivero, who finished 9th in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2009 (with Yves Parlier), then 3rd in the Barcelona World Race 2010-2011 with Antonio Piris.
Next, Jean Le Cam took command of her for the Vendée Globe (5th), before the monohull returned to Spain for the Barcelona 2014-2015 with Anna Corbella and Gérard Marin (3rd). Fabrice Amedeo acquired her in 2015 for a Transat Jacques Vabre (8th) with Éric Péron, then for the Vendée Globe (11th). Eighteenth in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2017 (with Giancarlo Pedote), Fabrice Amedeo passed on the batten to Romain Attanasio in 2018 for the Route du Rhum (13th), the Transat Jacques Vabre (15th) and the Vendée Globe 2020-21 on which he finished 14th. Beat Fankshauser, a Swiss outsider, bought the 60-foot boat at the end of the round-the-world race, and in April 2022 Gitana 80 was finally purchased by Oliver Heer Ocean Racing.
IMOCA, ‘International Monohull Open Class Association’ founded in 1991, manages the class of 60-foot Open monohulls. Combining competition, innovation, human adventure and safety on a day-to-day basis, the class contributes to the internationalisation of offshore racing.
In 2018, the Class inaugurated the IMOCA Globe Series, now including the two of the sports elite round-the-world races, the Vendée Globe and The Ocean Race.
Combined with IMOCA's sailing goals are its environmental goals. Finding ways to constantly respect the environment better, with an objective to collaborate for future solutions, is at the core of IMOCA's values.
